Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is one of the most important and successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. In 'Caprice Basque' (Capricho vasco) Op. 24, Sarasate used Spanish folk tunes. He dedicated this piece to the composer, conductor and pianist Otto Goldschmidt, a pupil of Mendelssohn. This work is influenced by the typically dotted rhythm of the 'zortzico', a Basque dance in 5/8 meter - a virtuoso and rousing piece for virtuosos.
For flute, oboe, trumpet and strings (piano reduction).
Edition for voices, two pianos and percussion. Carmina Burana, first performed in 1937, is based on an important collection of thirteenth-century poems found in the monastery of Benediktbeuren. Carl Orff made selections from this collection and in robust and delicate musical colors painted a manifold picture of life. Everything I have written up to now, and which you have unfortunately printed, you can shred into pulp. My collected works begin with 'Carmina Burana'. Carl Orff wrote to his publisher after the premiere. And so it was that his work caused a sensation in the whole world and continues to delight people of all cultures. Two copies needed for pianists.
19 pieces by 14 composers. Cello literature appropriate for the intermediate to advanced level player. For cello and piano.
For cello and orchestra (piano reduction). First performed and recorded by Yo Yo Ma and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
For cello and orchestra (piano reduction).
André Navarra (1911-1988) was the most famous French cellist of his generation, and the most influential cello teacher in Europe. A stand-out student of Navarra, Marcel Bardon has created this new edition of the Schumann Concerto for Cello based on Navarra's teaching of the piece, including specific coaching and interpretation commentary. This deluxe edition includes new music engravings of the solo cello part with piano (an orchestral reduction). In the cello part, Navarra's editorial markings appear in bright blue, in contrast to the black-notes of the original score. The package is completed with an excellent piano accompaniment, recorded by Hélène Desmoulin.
Like every other great 19th-century solo concerto, DvorákÂ's famous Cello Concerto was a collaboration between composer and virtuoso. It has long been known that certain solo passages in DvorákÂ's autograph score were actually written by the cellist Hanuš Wihan; but BärenreiterÂ's edition now reveals that some details in the orchestral parts are also in his writing, showing just how closely the two musicians were working together. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has painstakingly examined all the surviving sources, including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued, in order to produce an authoritative edition which restores Â- for the first time since the original edition was published in 1896 - DvorákÂ's final and definitive version of the solo cello part. This differs, in details, in almost every bar from the version found in all other modern editions, while hundreds of corrections have also been made to the orchestral parts. See TP620 for Study Score.
Although the autograph full score is lost, Lalo's working copy of the piano arrangement shows that he continued to edit the solo part with considerable care after publication of the full score. Many cellists have since published their own editions of the concerto, but the present edition gives lalo's own bowings and accentuation for the first time.
Originally, Lalo was meant to follow an officer's career but his musical talent soon became apparent and so he decided to become a musician. Every cellist is familiar with his Cello Concerto in d minor which is just as spirited as his Symphonie espagnole. Many renowned virtuosi, from Julius Klengel to Leonard Rose, have published their own editions of the concerto. Our Urtext edition distances itself from all of the additions made by other editors, but it offers both an unmarked part and one with fingerings and bowings by the famous cellist Heinrich Schiff. Parallel to our piano reduction, Breitkopf & Härtell are publishing a score, pocket score and orchestral material.
Critical edition based on the composer's manuscript. Cello part prepared by Ladislav Zelenka.
Elgar's last major work was the cello concerto, and it is unique in its poignancy and intensity. Through Jacqueline Du Pre's overwhelming interpretation, this work has now received the recognition it deserved and it will undoubtedly remain one of the best-loved concertos of all time. The cello part has been arranged for viola and piano by Lionel Tertis.

A large number of works by the Italian cellist Giovanni Battista Cirri (1724-1808) were published during his life. The Sonata in C Major is ideal for the progressing student. The accompanying bass part has deliberately been turned into a simple piano part so that it can also be played by pupils.
Jean-Baptiste Bréval (1753Â-1823) was a member of the orchestra at the Paris Opéra and also a prolific composer. His works include concertos for cello, string quartets, comic operas and a violoncello tutor. However he is best-known for the Sonata in C major which has become a standard work for teaching purposes, even in arrangements for other instruments. The two movements (Allegro and Rondo Grazioso) can also be performed independently from one another. This sonata belongs to the basic repertoire of every young cellist.
Debussy's 'Sonate pour violoncello et piano' was composed in the summer of 1915. It was the first of a planned set of six sonatas for various instrumental combinations of which Debussy only completed three. Imbued with that unmistakable Debussy charm this work has remained a standard in the repertoire since the premiere. It is without question the most performed cello sonata of the 20th century. Regina Back's Urtext edition for the first time makes use of Debussy's sketches held in a private collection which contain not only an important comment by Debussy regarding the balance of the instruments but also clarify several musical ambiguities found in the autograph and first edition. Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition comes with a detailed preface (Ger/Eng/Fr) elaborating not only on the genesis of the composition and its first performances but also providing performance practice information. The edition is rounded off with a facsimile and a critical commentary.
Edited by Clive Brown, Neal Peres Da Costa and Kate Bennett Wadsworth. With an Urtext solo part as well as a second part with performance markings.
Brahms' cello sonatas are probably amongst the most beautiful that have ever been written for this instrument. The publication of the two works in the new Brahms Complete Edition has prompted a new Urtext edition of the Sonata in F major: This classic work has now been newly engraved and reflects current scholarly findings.
A short while ago Henle issued Mendelssohn's second Violoncello Sonata, op. 58. Now the first Sonata, op. 45, is available for the first time as Urtext edition with a flawless music text. A preface and critical commentary provide detailed information on this major contribution to the romantic violoncello repertoire.
This revised edition of Beethoven's five sonatas incorporates the findings contained in the critical report of the Beethoven Complete Edition.
