Swing Song and Other Forgotten Treasures by Ethel Barns--Nancy Schecter, violin and Cary Lewis, piano
With the exception of Swing Song, this is the first recording of these pieces for violin and piano by Ethel Barns--Chanson Gracieuse, Danse Negre (Scherzo), Swing Song (L'Escarpolette), Sonata No.2 in A Major, Op.9, Idylle Pastorale, Sonata No.4 in G minor, Op.24, Chant Elegiaque and Polonaise. From the review by Margaret Campbell in Strad Magazine, 'This CD is sheer enchantment, with some haunting melodies that persist in the memory--Chanson gracieuse is a typical example. Although Ethel Barns (1874-1948) is completely unknown today, she was highly regarded as a composer, violinist and pianist in her own lifetime..Nancy Schecter studied at the Juilliard School in New York and has followed a distinguished career as leader in chamber music and orchestras in the US..As a soloist she reaches the heart of Barns's music in that she has just the right approach to the Romantic style, with playing that is graceful but never indulgent. In the Second Sonata, in particular, she and the sensitive Cary Lewis display both the strength and the tenderness so characteristic of Barns's writing..'
