The fourth Sonata displays Field's finest pianism coupled with his utmost creativity. A broad "cantabile" foreshadowing Chopin's Concerto no. 1, occasional restless turns and twists of modulation and various oddities such as opening the last movement with a dominant seventh chord contribute to the sonata's interest.
