For his performance programs and recordings, Schnabel preferred the classical and romantic works (witness his recordings of the complete Beethoven Sonatas), yet determinedly created new ground in hiscompositional work. The Sonata for Solo Cello seems somewhat out of place for its year of composition, 1931, but consider that it was written with thegreat Gregor Piatigorsky in mind.
