Soul Garden CD (composer DEREK BERMEL)
Call it postmodern or maybe world/modern fusion, Bermel's music is wildly far-reaching in its many references andquotations. The title track is a blend of old-time country string playing and modern string quartet discourse, while""Wanderings"" for wind quintet starts with the sound of a Middle Eastern snake charmer but moves into jazz andblues riffs. The most eloquent and cohesive piece on the disc is also the most eclectic, ""Turning"" for solo piano. Aset of variations on the folk hymn ""Yes, Jesus Loves Me,"" it manages to quote Ives' ""Concord"" Sonata and integratesome bitonal Scott Joplin along the way.In all, the disc contains eight chamber and solo works, which mix good humor and good writing in eloquentperformances by pianist Christopher Taylor, the Borromeo Sting Quartet and the composer on clarinet.--Joseph Dalton, The Albany Times Union
