Spanish Moss - Later Elementary Level
Description: This piece has a short rhythmic introduction that leads to a sultry melody line above the hypnotizing monotony of the pattern from the intro. The broken fifths and sixths in the A section are replaced with blocked fifths in the B section, but they have more mobility and cover a wider keyboard range. The melody line becomes more animated until a brief return to the A theme at the end.
Purpose: This piece is a vehicle for creative, expressive playing.
Suggestions for Instruction: Stress the feel of a firm flowing, long legato line in one hand over the two-note slurs and staccato accompaniment pattern. The articulation of the melody line in the B section will need careful attention. An overall feeling of weightlessness should prevail. Don't take the “Allegretto” too fast -but it should not hold back either. The whole piece must flow.
