South of the Border - Early Intermediate Level
Description: A bright and cheerful piece to capture the spirit of Mexico-which is south of the Texan border. The middle section with its modulation to the parallel minor mode (f minor), darkens the mood. The return to the A section welcomes back the gay and festive sounds from the opening.
Purpose: To provide an early intermediate solo that is challenging and fun to practice and perform. The syncopated rhythms and change of clefs will keep students alert and interested.
Suggestions for Instruction: Before sightreading this solo, have the student count aloud as he or she claps the rhythm. It is beneficial for the teacher to clap the rhythm with the student. Be sure to point out that the top note of the left hand chord is part of the basic melody. The middle section may require the use of the una corda to achieve a pianissimo level of sound. Please encourage the student to use it. It may be lifted at the mp in the last measure on page 3.
