Starburst
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay's 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician.
