Mano Sinistra edited by Joseph Smith
Selected etudes for the cultivation of the left hand. Includes studies by Czerny, Cramer, Clementi, Hiller and Jensen. From the editor's preface: "Didactic etudes, such as those in this anthology, serve a purpose not fulfilled by either exercises or repertoire alone and combine some of the advantages of both. The didactic etude is designed to help the pianist overcome some specific technical challenge rather than serve as a work for public performance. (I am using 'didactic' to distinguish these from the Lisztian 'concert etudes,' which are intended for performance, presuppose a high level of virtuosity, and are not necessarily limited to a single technical concern.) Unlike exercises, didactic etudes enable us not merely to increase velocity, but also to develop techniques directed towards aesthetic goals."
