John Tavener: Ypakoe
Work for Solo Piano commissioned for the City of London Festival in 1999.
Quoting John Tavener: Ypaköe, in Greek refers to the Yapöe of Easter “Why seek ye among the dead, as though He were mortal man?”. Ypaköe for solo piano is a meditation on both the Passion and Resurrection of Christ.
Ypakoë is a totally spiritual concept - to attone the individual's (performer's or listener's) will to the divine will. Ypakoë is personal and its violation may permit sanctions, the purpose of which is to heal the listeners.
