Title Chopinesque - Later Elementary Level

Description: A miniature study of the waltz style of Chopin. Both hands get a chance to “sing” the melody. There is some shading-a practice in “balance.”

Purpose: An introduction to waltz bass and melodic phrasing; legato and staccato touches; balance. The piece does not use “standard” primary chords throughout.

Suggestions for Instruction: I always start with the left hand. The first note of the chord will be held while the rest of the chord comes in on the second beat. The middle section allows the left hand to “sing.”

Point out the length of the slurs. One hand sings legato while the other hand is played staccato. The pedal is not needed if the first chord tone is held throughout the measure-or if all the slurred notes are connected smoothly.

Key: A minor
