Title |
An Ancient Civilization - Later Elementary Level
Description: This is a rather plaintive and dreamy work which might be conceived as a duet involving left and right hand parts of equal musical interest and equal difficulty. It is written in simple song form, with the second half of the middle section (measures 20-27) building up harmonic interest and tension through a series of sequences.
Purpose: To have the performer and listener reflect on the ancient past.
Suggestions for Instruction: Play both parts with an even legato touch, and give them equal importance. Move ahead a little through the sequential passages, measures 20-27, and then pull back before the material of the first section returns (measure 28.) Performer and listeners alike should savor the mood of this piece, and its mood should be allowed to linger.
