A Jolly Jest - Mid-Elementary Level
Description: This is a “jolly” piece built mostly of primary triad positions in D minor and G major -the exception being b flat and E harmonies. A bright, allegro tempo adds to the humor of the jest.
Purpose: The purpose of this piece is to offer a cheerful 6/8 setting that explores the two basic rhythm patterns but without the “tarantella” sound.
Suggestions for Instruction: Notice that the LH patterns all consist of blocked fifths and broken, root position triads. The LH will need to be able to move from one position to the other with ease, grace and security to keep the tempo moving forward. The reaches demanded of the RH generally outline chord inversions. If the student's theory background has reached this level, the relationship of the b flat harmony (relative minor) and the E Major harmony (secondary dominant) could be analyzed and discussed.
