Title |
Andante Cantabile from String Quartet, Op. 11 transcribed by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, edited by Jeffrey Solow
The arrangement printed here is by cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen who premiered the Rococo Variations in 1877. To enhance the melodies' brilliance on the cello, Fitzenhagen raised it a semitone from its original key of Bb. Tchaikovsky legitimized Fitzenhagen's arrangement by setting it for cello and string orchestra, around the same time he composed his Pezzo Cappriccioso for cello and orchestra.
