Title Meditation on the Old Czech Hymn 'St. Wenzeslaus' for String Quartet, Op. 35A. (Set of Parts) See TP583 for Study Score)

Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian Â"St. WenceslasÂ" hymn. The hymnÂ's message Â- a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint Â- was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. This first Urtext edition, prepared by the Suk scholar Zdenek Nouza, is published in two scorings, one for string quartet (BA 9583; study score TP 583) and another for string orchestra (BA 9584). The orchestral version differs in some details and has an added part for double bass.

Title Piano Quartet in A Minor, Op. 1

Josef SukÂ's piano quartet (1874Â-1935) quickly became a standard work, not least as a result of the extensive concerts given by the Bohemian Quartet, in which Suk was second violinist. This is however the first scholarly-critical edition of this work. It is based largely on a revision of the first edition which contains SukÂ's alterations of 1914 and appeared in 1924, on the first copy as well as on newly discovered copies of the parts. Valuable information has also been extracted from the printed parts as the original copies are now no longer extant.

Title String Quartet No. 1 (Bb), Op. 11 (Study Score)

The life of Josef Suk (1874Â-1935), the well-known composer and professional violinist, was strongly influenced by his membership of the famous Â"Czech QuartetÂ" (founded in 1892). Suk was part of the quartet until 1933, performing in almost four thousand concerts. The String Quartet No. 1 in B-flat major op. 11 (1896) was the first composition alongside the Serenade op. 6, which was published by Simrock as a result of mediation by SukÂ's father-in-law, Antonín Dvorák. Dvorák considered this work of the young musician to be Â"the best that I know by him.Â" Suk re-wrote the fourth movement twenty years after its completion because he was dissatisfied with the original version. Despite his use of the same thematic material, the new version differs so substantially that this movement is frequently performed on its own. The primary source for the original form of the quartet was the second edition by Simrock. For the alternative version of the Finale the present edition is based on a score and parts marked with SukÂ's corrections.

Title String Quartet No. 2, Op. 31 (Set of Parts)

First scholarly-critical edition. The single-movement String Quartet No. 2 by Josef Suk (1874Â-1935) was written at the height of his compositional powers. Completed in Krecovice in May 1911, this demanding work, with its complex harmonies and motivic structure, seemed avant-garde for its day: the Berlin premiere of November 1912 was accompanied by protests from the audience. Now Zdenek Nouza has edited the first scholarly-critical edition of this piece. The principal source is the first edition in full score, published by Simrock in Berlin. But Nouza has also consulted the printed parts (containing additions of great interest to performers) as well as the engraverÂ's copy used for the printed score (with autograph corrections from the composer) and additional sources such as sketches.

Title Things Lived and Dreamt for Piano op. 30. Editor: Gabrielová, Jarmila.

The cycle Things Lived and Dreamt by Josef Suk (1874Â-1935) is his magnum opus for the piano and has been called the Â"diary of an artistÂ". Although SukÂ's musical language never exceeds the bounds of tonality, his wealth of resources, the flexible harmony, chords of stacked thirds and meticulous performance instructions were new to the Bohemia of his day. The autograph contains many cuts, overwritings and barely decipherable passages, yet it is carefully prepared and largely identical to the first edition of 1909. This first scholarly-critical edition takes all source variants into account for the first time.
