Based on the instrumental interlude of the well-known Peking Opera, Farewell My Concubine. ca. 10 minutes.

China Dreams is a four-movement work written in 1995 for the Seattle Symphony. The work reflects Sheng's nostalgia for his homeland, expressed through use of Chinese folk melodies from different provinces. A recording available on Bis CD 1122 by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra also includes other recent works by Sheng: Postcards (1997) and Flute Moon (1999).

For Clarinet and String Quartet. Written in 1994, the premiere performance was given by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, New York City, David Shifrin clarinet.

Dance Capriccio is inspired by the dance folk music of the Sherpa people, a small ethnic group (population ca. 150,000) mostly living in western Nepal, in the high mountains of the Himalayas.

Flute Moon, premiered by the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1999, is for solo flute/piccolo with a chamber orchestra comprised of harp, piano, percussion and strings. The music is based on Chinese mythology and a poem written in c.1200 by Jiang Kui. The title of the piece is implied in the poetry, which begins, Oh, moonlight, my old friend, how many times have you accompanied my flute beside the wintersweet blossom? Composer Bright Sheng, who emigrated from China to the U.S. in 1982 at the age of 27, is a master at translating Eastern subject matter and sensibility into the language of Western contemporary classical composition. Duration: c. 17 minutes.

H'UN (Lacerations) is a FULL SCORE to the extensive work written by Bright Sheng. This work recounts the Chinese Culteral Revolution 1966-1976. This was a very dark, sad time for the people of China. This work contains no melody because the composer felt this horrific time did not deserve one.

Composer Note: In 1990, after eight years in the United States, I wrote my first work for solo piano, titled My Song, commissioned for Peter Serkin. At the time, my primary compositional concentration was to develop a melodic and harmonic style within the boundaries of Chinese folk music, which are mostly in pentatonic modes, and contemporary Western Classical music. As a result, all the four movements in My Song were either based on existing Chinese folk tunes or written in their style. I was asked recently by another virtuoso pianist friend, Yefim Bronfman, to write a work for solo piano. After the passing of 17 years, I wonder if there is any change in my writing. I therefore titled the new suite My Other Song. There are four movements in the composition, the first three of which are brief and provide contrast in character. The theme of the last movement, the longest, is based on a Buddhist chant heard at the wake for my mother in February 2005.-Bright Sheng

M'ai Sang (My Song) can be translated into Pulsating Voices. A 10-minute piece in 3 movements that interprets Chinese folk-music and dance into a Western mold. Written for and recorded by Peter Serkin in 1989.

This joyful suite of pieces for solo cello, based on folk melodies from various regions of the composer's native China, was written for and premiered by Yo-Yo Ma, who has also recorded it for Sony Classical.

Commissioned by the Takács Quartet, Great Performers of Lincoln Center, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Colorado and the Ensemble Music Society of Indianapolis. Duration ca. 18 minutes.

This piece was jointly commissioned by the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Richmond, Virginia. It is dedicated to the Shanghai Quartet, who debuted it in March 2000 at the University of Richmond.

A haunting unaccompanied violin work based on folk music of the composer's native China. Duration ca. 10 minutes.

Based on a well-known Chinese folk song, a common influence in Sheng's works. In this setting, the viola should evoke the timbre, and tone quality of a female folk singer.

Requested by Seiji Ozawa for Leonard Bernstein's 70th Birthday celebration, Bright Sheng's Three Chinese Love Songs is for Voice, Viola, and Piano. Set to Chinese folk songs, this collection includes: Blue Flower · At the Hillside Where Horses Are Running · and The Streams Flows.

Three fantasy movements which draw on uniquely different inspirations. ca. 15 minutes.

An early Sheng work based on ci love poetry from the eastern Chinese city of Hang Zhou. Ci poetry was written with music in mind and intended to be sung.
