Russian master composer Rodion Shchedrin (born 1932) wrote Chastushki (which translates to Ditties in English) as a piano solo version of his Orchestral Concerto No. 1 Naughty Limericks of 1963.

With his five piano concertos, his sonatas and 24 preludes and fugues, Rodion Shchedrin is one of the most eminent composers of piano music of our time. A gifted pianist, he has given the first performances of most of his works himself. This concerto was written in honour of Bella Davidovich, to celebrate her 75th birthday. Her lyrical, elegant playing shows its influence in the character of the composition, with the lontano of the title being expressed in the frequent use of echo effects.

Many of Rodion Shchedrin's compositions are distinguished by deeply Slavonic feeling and thrilling virtuoso displays. Even though Shchedrin has won recognition all over the world for his work, he remains an essentially Russian composer who has not broken off his ties to Russian musical folk traditions and poetry. It is thus not surprising to learn of his profound admiration for his compatriot Shostakovich (Shchedrin writes: He is like a God to me.) The dialogues in this one-movement orchestral piece give expression to this admiration; they describe and offer a musical commentary on the character of Shostakovich's music and of the man himself.

With the seven pieces in this Journal Shchedrin has created a cycle for piano reflecting his own life as a composer and pianist. These are remarkable confessions by the Russian musician who wrote his first major compositions as a twenty year-old student at the Moscow Conservatoire and who has been greatly involved in the international music scene in the post-soviet era. Using modern composition techniques the work combines traditional and modern forms in jottings that are like diary entries · a musical autobiography in miniature.

You can even play a duet on a solo instrument! In his piece Duo for solo violin Rodion Shchedrin has written a dialogue within a monologue. In notes spread across two systems the violin displays its characteristic contrasting qualities. The instrument contradicts itself: staccato notes cut in abruptly within a legato line, quiet phrases are interrupted by an expressive fortissimo, while a stubbornly contemporary answering voice is set against Bach's formal language. Shchedrin succeeds in finding a remarkably powerful way of reminding every solo violinist that their instrument is inhabited by at least two different souls.

This short study explores the entire dynamic range of the instrument. It is based on a Russian fairy-tale which can be recited (ad lib.) towards the end of the piece.

Composed as an homage to Joseph Haydn to mark the 200th anniversary of the composer's death in 2009.

Sir Yehudi Menuhin, who died in March 1999, was both the founder and for 40 years the guiding spirit of the summer music festival that is named after him in the Swiss town of Gstaad. The Gstaad festival commissioned the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin (b. 1932) to write the Menuhin-Sonata as a memorial to the great violinist. Dmitry Sitkovetsky (Violin) and Michel Dalberto (Piano) premiered the piece in Saanen · a suitable musical hommage and tribute to one of the most influential musical personalities of the 20th century.

Both movements explore the specific sonorities of the bass recorder. The first movement is predominantly lyrical, whereas the second is very rhythmic and dominated by percussive effects.

The combination of cantabile elements and tight staccato rhythm, typical of Shchedrin's piano music, makes this 'little' sonata an effective, yet quite easily playable piece. The 'Sonatina' is dedicated to Shchedrin's wife, the famous prima-ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, and was performed for the first time inMoscow in 2005 as a birthday present.
