cover for 10 Choral Preludes
10 Choral Preludes - Organ

Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) is one of the most interesting composers of the late Romantic period. She studied piano and composition at the Frankfurt Conservatoire 1895-1903 and thereafter in Leipzig with Max Reger 1908/9. Her most significant legacy is her organ music, which takes up the contrapuntal, highly chromatic composition techniques used by her teacher. These ten chorale preludes Op. 73 were written in 1930 and are suitable for concert or liturgical performance.

The composer Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) studied with Max Reger in Leipzig from 1908 to 1910 and on graduation won the Arthur Nikisch award. She valued Reger greatly and a life-long friendship ensued. A freelance composer, she continued to live in Oppenheim / Rhein. Her substantial oeuvre remains largely unpublished. The present volume introduces the most beautiful of J. Senfter's works for piano. Most of these pieces are available on the WERGO-CD WER 6264-2.

Tonstück - for 8 Wind Instruments

Johanna Senfter studied music at the Conservatoire in Frankfurt and then in 1908/9 with Max Reger at the Leipzig Conservatoire. Her late Romantic music draws inspiration from the polyphonic structure of Reger and Bach, as well as from the complex use of sounds and motifs in the music of J. Brahms, which did not leave her in an easy position in the context of twentieth Century modernism. Growing interest in the work of female composers has also led to a rediscovery of J. Senfter in recent years. Her extensive work includes piano music, orchestral works and chamber music, including the Piece for flute, clarinet (in A), two bassoons and four horns, first performed in Karlsruhe in 1934.
