These two works are combined into one volume that includes an interesting biography, background information on the writing of the music, indispensable performance suggestions and a listing of recommended readings and recordings. Also included is an outstanding CD recording from the Naxos label, by Hungarian pianist Klara Kormendi. She studied at the Bartok Conservatory and later at the Liszt Academy, where she received her diploma with distinction in 1967. Kormendi enjoyed early success in a number of national competitions, before embarking on a career that has taken her to the major musical centers of Europe. She has recorded works by Debussy and Ravel and the complete piano music of Eric Satie.

In 1903, Satie composed his famous cycle for piano duet with the provocative and ambiguous title Â"3 Morceaux en forme de PoireÂ". (In French, Â"poireÂ" means Â"pearÂ" but also Â"dimwitÂ"). It is a detached and ironic commentary on the constraints of musical form. Now this cycle is being published in a scholarly-critical Urtext edition for the first time. Convenient page turns, a score format, translations of the French expression and tempo markings, SatieÂ's enigmatic introduction, performance suggestions by the Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher and a detailed foreword by the renowned musicologist Jens Rosteck make the study and performance of these pieces a true pleasure.

Like the Gymnopédies, the Gnossiennes also allude to ancient Greek traditions. Perhaps inspired by the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889, Satie made use of oriental ornamentation. With his subtle intuition for musical tendencies that were en vogue, he combined exotic elements with influences from cabaret music and, of course, his own ideas to create something very new. Several of the Gnossiennes take one by surprise on account of puzzling fragments of text between the lines of music. According to Satie they were not supposed to be read aloud but to create a secret link between composer and player - a creative challenge, which we are passing on to present-day musicians in our Urtext edition.

These new, completely revised editions are based on Robert Orledge's critical edition of Satie's works for piano. He has returned to Satie's manuscripts and first editions to give pianists completely accurate and reliable texts to play from.

Between 1889 and 1897 Satie composed a series of piano pieces. He gave these the eccentric title Â"GnossiennesÂ" and provided consciously ironic performance instructions in which he satirized the excessive gestures of Romantic piano playing. This Bärenreiter Urtext edition offers new variant readings and presents Â"Gnossienne No. 7Â" in its authentic form for the first time. Like the Â"GymnopédiesÂ" (BA 10804), the Â"GnossiennesÂ" are particularly suitable for piano teaching because of their easy to medium difficulty level. Suggestions for performance are given by the Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher. In addition a detailed foreword by the distinguished musicologist Jens Rosteck provides valuable information on the background to the composition, its significance and interpretation.
