This lovely, brief piece by the great film composer was first published in the Italian architecture magazine Domus in July, 1941, in the publication's declared purpose of reflecting the artistic tastes of its readers. Early advanced level, but certainly playable by progressing students.

In the unparalleled series ,Cadenza', Schott Musik International presents cadences of well-known instrumental concertos of classical and Romantic music, composed by major composers and soloists of our time. The cadences of Mozart's Concerto for flute, harp and orchestra in C major KV 299 were created by Nino Rota. It is not known when and for which occasion Rota wrote these cadences. But the two soloists, on the other hand, to whom he dedicated the cadences are quite well-known: the harpist Clelia Gatti Aldronandi and the famous flutist Severino Gazzelloni. Rota's brilliant neoclassicism is perfect for the virtuoso dialogue between the two solo instruments on the themes of the concerto.

Known primarily in the US as composer of film scores (The Godfather, the films of Fellini), Italian composer Rota (1911-1979) wrote many classical works including operas, ballets and instrumental works.

On Christmas Eve 1950, the Italian Radio broadcast a radio play based on Adalbert Stifter's novella Rock Crystal. The music was written by Nino Rota, the translation was made by Gabriella Benci and Ippolito Pizzetti (the son of the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, one of Rota's teachers). Here, too, the duo carefully edited the existing piano version. With these two pieces, the piano duet repertoire has taken on a whole new colour, and both performers and listeners can plunge into the atmosphere of Rota's film music. Both waltzes are based on the famous musical cryptogram B-A-C-H and were created in 1975. The very same year, Nino Rota was asked by Federico Fellini, who was just shooting the film Casanova, to write pieces he wanted to use for his film. Thus, Due Valzer sul nome BACH became a part of the film score of Fellini's Casanova and ultimately its main motifs. The third waltz in this series remained unfinished.

This Fantasia in G was only recently discovered among the last manuscripts to be examined in the Nino Rota archive in Venice. Together with the 15 Preludes (ED 9386), it is one of the few works by this Italian composer for piano solo. It was composed in the oppressive atmosphere of the last years of the war. The first and closing sections conjure up a feeling of late Romanticism from the distant past, while the middle section is characterised by melancholy melodies typical of Rota.

From the cooperation between the composer Nino Rota and the Italian celebrated film director Lina Wertmüller, the musical Gian Burrasca in the piano version made by Roberto Negri; the enclosed CD contains all the music appearing in the issue, played by Negri himself. Now, for the very first time, everyone can enjoy pieces such as Viva la pappa col pomodoro and La befana di piazza Navona. The appendix contains the full lyrics (in Italian) of the musical.
