Title Capriccio for Solo Violin

James Matheson's Capriccio was composed for Jennifer Koh who premiered it as part of the 2016 NY Philharmonic Biennial. Playing against the expectations of flamboyant violin caprices, Matheson's work is dramatically, even eerily quiet throughout its entirety and inspired by the arpeggiated preludes from Bach's suites. As in the Bach preludes, Matheson's study in motivically-phrased 16th notes has no marked tempo, offering performers a vastly broad spectrum to express this quiet exploration. For advanced violinists.

Title Pound for Piano (1999)

James MathesonÂ's Pound for piano was written at the request of Xak Bjerken, pianist, Cornell faculty member and close friend of the composer. Given Bjerken's incredible technique and musicianship, Matheson was faced with the task of writing a piece that would actually challenge him. Matheson wrote Pound in hopes that it would be nearly impossible to play, and yet, Bjerken took to it with ease. Written in three movements, Pound creates the illusion of two pianos, and is meant to be played without pause, totaling approximately 11 minutes. For advanced players

Title Sonata For Violin and Piano

Sonata for Violin and Piano Matheson's Sonata was written for and dedicated to Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music, staunch supporters of chamber music both classical and contemporary since its founding in 1988. The list of performers and performances over the years is impressive, and the Matheson Sonata is one of but ten commissions over that span.

Title Violin Concerto--Solo Part and Piano Reduction

James Matheson's Violin Concerto began life with the compound honor of being co-commissioned by the Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Concerto was premiered in the 2011-12 season by violinist Baird Dodge with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Chicago Symphony, followed by violinist Martin Chalifour with Pablo Heras-Casado and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Matheson cites inspiration from Bach's writing for violin, from the grand tradition of the concerto repertoire, and from the enticing modern ironies of M.C. Escher, all combined with Matheson's imagination for the sensibly unpredictable. Listen as Matheson describes his Violin Concerto in a YouTube essay. For advanced performers.
