Samuel Dushkin wrote several violin transcriptions of then known and popular melodies, naturally taken from works by his friend Stravinsky, but also by other composers such as Bizet and Rakhmaninov, Gershwin and Boccherini, and others. Dushkin formed a deeply moving lament for violin and piano out of the monologue of self-doubting Boris Godounov from the opera of the same name by Modest Mussorgsky.

A brilliant example of Moussorgsky's innovative techniques, this dramatic work was completed and orchestrated by Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov after Moussorgsky's death. Full of intense effects, the piece has long been a staple of the orchestral repertoire, particularly after its memorable accompaniment to the Witches' Sabbath sequence of Disney's Fantasia. This enduringly popular work has been carefully reproduced from an early authoritative score for this handsome, inexpensive edition.

Inspired through a visit to an exhibition with pictures by the painter Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky wrote this cycle of piano pieces in 1874. 'Pictures at an Exhibition' is generally regarded as the most important work for piano by this Russian master. Easy version for piano.

A major edition of 67 songs, all in the original keys, which covers a variety of voice types. Cyrillic and transliteration are included with each song, as are line by line English translations for study. Mussorgsky's rich imagination as a composer of song is not well-known. The style is unique, the music directly emotional. There are four complete song cycles in this edition. The first, Youthful Years, is an unconventional song grouping, not written for the same voice type, a song cycle that's more a convenience of collecting early work. It would better be viewed as 17 individual songs. The other three cycles are The Nursery (for mezzo-soprano), Sunless (for mezzo-soprano or baritone), and Songs and Dances of Death (mezzo-soprano or soprano). There are also 32 individual songs not in cycles. Mussorgsky wrote substantial revisions of 11 songs; both the original version and the second version are included for these.

Â"Night on Bald MountainÂ" depicts a witchesÂ' sabbath on St. JohnÂ's Day, the night between 23 and 24 June. Its sections present the infernal noise of ghostly voices, the chattering and quarrelling of witches, the appearance of ghosts, the dance of witches and demons, the appearance of Satan, the adoration and Black Mass, and finally the pealing bells of the village church, announcing the break of day and thus the end of the witchesÂ' sabbath. Whether intentionally or not, Mussorgsky actually finished the work on the eve of St. JohnÂ's Day (23 June 1867), after spending twelve days on its composition. Technically speaking, Joachim LinckelmannÂ's exciting version for wind quintet is the arrangement of an arrangement, as MussorgskyÂ's symphonic poem is almost invariably heard in the familiar version by Rimsky-Korsakov.

The Russian composer Mussorgsky was for the most part self-taught. His contemporaries were not always enthusiastic about the innovations in his music and accused him of lacking technique. Today, however, Mussorgsky is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. Although he gained fame primarily as a composer of operas and songs, Mussorgsky also wrote a number of piano works; for example the suite Pictures at an Exhibition, from 1874.

The catalyst for the piano cycle Â"Pictures at an ExhibitionÂ", composed in 1874, was a memorial exhibition held that year for the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. He was a friend of Mussorgsky who had died in 1873. It is not only MussorgskyÂ's most important contribution to the piano repertoire, but through its relationship to HartmannÂ's pictures and the translation of this idea into a composition, the cycle holds a unique place in 19th century piano repertoire. Christoph Flamm, an internationally renowned specialist of Russian music of the 19th and early 20th centuries, has edited this Urtext edition for Bärenreiter. He has re-evaluated the sources and in the process has discovered surprising variant readings of the well-known musical text. The edition will meet the demands of advanced piano students, teachers and pianists.

In 1874, Mussorgsky wrote his famous piano cycle inspired by an exhibition of pictures by his friend Viktor Hartmann. The resources of musical realism are used to describe the ten pictures in great detail; the interposed Promenades then reflect the subjective impressions and feelings of the visitor looking at the pictures. This edition is based on Mussorgsky's original score, with the addition of a few markings apparently overlooked by the composer, inserted in brackets. Fingerings have been added, together with the original comments on individual pieces from the first edition.
