Bohuslav Martinu wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932Â-33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during the composerÂ's lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller, contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk, who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. The solo part has been revised by a leading Czech violinist and performer of MartinuÂ's music.

After hearing the Boston Symphony Orchestra perform MartinuÂ's Symphony No. 1 in New York, Mischa Elman commissioned the composer to write a violin concerto for him. Martinu thereupon composed his Second Violin Concerto in 1943. That same year Elman played the solo part at the première, with Sergei Koussevitzky conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. The solo part has been revised by a leading Czech violinist and performer of MartinuÂ's music.

Though Bohuslav Martinu produced a lot of didactic material for the piano, not all of it has been published and many delightful works have remained unknown. In this Â"Easy Piano Pieces and DancesÂ" album, MartinuÂ's four-part piano cycle Â"Crotchets and QuaversÂ", composed in Paris in 1937, appears for the first time. It is devoted to changes of metre and tempo.
The work, previously known only from his correspondence, was long considered lost until a manuscript copy resurfaced in Brno in 2011. The jazz piece Â"One-stepÂ", composed in 1921, is also made accessible here for the first time. It hitherto only existed in the composerÂ's autograph. Along with these two Â"discoveriesÂ", this album contains the dance pieces that Martinu composed in Policka in the 1920s as well as the three-part cycle Â"ChristmasÂ", composed in Paris in 1927. These were previously available in Â"Compositions for PolickaÂ".

MartinuÂ's Nonet No. 2 was composed in 1959, the final year of his life. It was commissioned by the ensemble Czech Nonet which premiered the piece at the Salzburg Festival and it appeared in print posthumously in autumn of that same year. The principal source for this edition was MartinuÂ's autograph score. A photo-reproduction of the autograph with handwritten entries by the performers was used as a reference source as well as the first edition, which includes several amendments made by the Czech Nonet and authorised by the composer. Also taken into account were the corrections found in the correspondence between Martinu and violinist Emil Leichner, the ensembleÂ's artistic director. Unlike the version in the complete edition, the clarinet part has been transposed for the clarinet in B-flat.
