Grade 5 expands on the concepts form earlier levels and presents new ones: sixteenth-note patterns, seventh chords, finger independence, voicing, augmented triads, rubato, and assymetrical rhythms. Students continue to learn about the different eras of music, and refine their skills of pedaling, finger substitution, and musical terminologyÂ--so they can play beautifully and intelligently. New keys are E-flat major and C minor. Seven touch releases are presented through various technical exercises and pieces, and correct technique is reinforced.

For less advanced players, a simplified viola part (without double stops and omitting most of the embelishments) is also included and may be substituted for the more difficult part
