Fourteen Little Pictures for piano trio is a set of 14 separate miniatures, stitched together and interwoven to form a single through-composed work, lasting about 25 minutes. The music presents the members of the trio in a series of different contexts, sometimes all three having equal importance, sometimes individuals coming to the fore, and sometimes reduced to a duo or even to a solitary player. The work was commissioned by the BBC to mark the 25th anniversary of the collaboration of Peter Frankl, György Pauk and Ralph Kirshbaum, and was first performed by them on 21 May 1997 at the Wigmore Hall, London.

The Lekota chant is set for a three-part advanced choir and the Latin is set for a unison beginning choir. MacMillan uses tubular bells, flute and piano to color, embellish and outline the vocal material.

The composer writes, "Kiss on Wood is an ornamental and highly elongated paraphrase on the Good Friday versicle, Ecce lignum crucis in quo salus mundi pependit: Venite adoremus (Behold the wood of the cross on which the saviour of the world was hung: come let us adore him). This is sung as the crucifix is slowly unveiled and before the people are invited forward to kiss the wood of the cross. The music and title are devotional in intent but can equally represent a gesture of love on the wooden instruments making this music."

Composed in 1986 for the wedding of friends, the manuscript for Offertorium recently came to light as the couple celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary. This exquisite miniature is a welcome addition to MacMillan's canon of reflective nuptial organ pieces.

Commissioned as a ballet score for the New York City Ballet. In three movements: Cumnock Fair, Shambards, Shamnation. Inspired by the poetry of Edwin Muir.

MacMillan revives the ancient practice of writing music based on the structure of the Rosary (The most famous example being the Rosary Sonatas of 17th century composer Heinrich Biber). The Mysteries of Light is inspired by the Luminous Mysteries, Rosary meditations introduced by John Paul II in 2002.

This is a setting for children's choir and piano of a Scots language poem by James McGonigal. The music is fashioned appropriately, attempting to capture the rumbustious folksiness of this joyous but mystical vision. (2:15)

Composed for large orchestra between 1985-87 and not premiered until 2014 by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. 'Keening' is a form of vocal lament and mourning.
