This Cuban-flavored piece was commissioned by the All Ohio Piano Ensemble for the advanced group of piano students, called The Dream Team. The rhythmic energy of the Mambo and its ostinati pervaded the repertoire of the musical dance bands for the better part of the second half of the 20th century, with Tito Puente and many others helping to establish the Mambo as an exciting and exotic dance.

Sketches in Jazz is a collection of six intermediate piano solos. Written to intrigue the piano student by stimulating interest in jazz, these solos are fun to practice, challenging to learn and exciting to perform.

An Indian-styled bass part is featured here, with the drum-sound in staccato open fifths in the left hand of the Secondo part of this A-Minor duet. The Primo part will be less demanding on the pianist, but still provide nice opportunities for changes in expression and touch. The Secondo will have melodic phrases to interject throughout the middle lines by way of contrast.

The D major lyrical melody in the opening section is contrasted nicely with a chordal middle section in the key of B-flat. The 2 vs 3, double thirds, and extended L.H. arpeggios require the skills of a late intermediate pianist. The andante con moto tempo makes it great preparatory literature for the Chopin nocturnes.

Ballad in D Major starts with short phrases using scale passages and harmonic intervals of a sixth as melodic components. Shorter note values appear in the middle section building to a chordal texture at the end. The next ballad in G minor, marked Â"andante espressivoÂ" employs extended L.H. arpeggios and some cross rhythms (2 vs 3). Ballad in F Major has frequent changes in register for the L.H. and the pulse varies from duplets to triplets in the accompaniment. Students will enjoy playing the beautiful melodies in these ballads that call for rubato and use of pedal.
