One of Leos JanácekÂ's last chamber music works was written in the autumn of 1926 at the suggestion of the pianist Otakar Hollmann (1894Â-1967), an invalid from the First World War. Like his contemporary Paul Wittgenstein, Hollmann urged composers to write something for piano left hand; he succeeded in winning over Bohuslav Martinu, Erwin Schulhoff and Janácek to do this. Janácek did not want, as he put it, to compose a Â"dance for one legÂ", but finally wrote a four-movement work with associations to military music, scored for piano, flute (piccolo), two trumpets, three trombones (preferably valve trombones because of the fast passages) and a tenor tuba. The French horn was allowed by the composer to substitute the tuba. The Capriccio was premiered by Otakar Hollmann and members of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague on 2 March 1928 in the presence of the enthusiastic composer.

Â"The Glagolitic MassÂ", a significant sacred work in Leoš JanácekÂ's output only appears towards the end of his life. Janácek composed this work for soloists, chorus and orchestra in Old Church Slavonic in the spa resort of Luhacovice in the summer and autumn 1926. He revised it at the end of 1927 after its first performance (Brno, 5.12.1927). The score of the mass was only published after the composerÂ's death in 1929. The later revision, known as the Â"final authorised versionÂ", is contained in this study score edition. This is the significant version which is mostly used for performances. It is richer in orchestration, easier to learn and more stringent in some important passages.

Fingering: Dénes Várjon Piano music occupies a small, but nevertheless musically important place in Janácek's oeuvre. Our edition of In the Mists by the seasoned Janácek editor Jirí Zahrádka is an impressive example of this. The small cycle was composed in 1912 and first published the following year. But as was so often the case, Janácek was prompted to revise it. Following the first performance of the work in Prague by the pianist Stepán Václav in December 1922, the composer and interpreter jointly undertook a revision, which was published in 1924. We are now publishing this definitive version in a Henle Urtext edition, which also provides convincing solutions for practical questions, such as how to deal with inconsistent pedal markings by Václav and Jánacek.

The little march composed in 1924 forms the nucleus of the suite for wind instruments Mládí (51481093 / 51487093), in which the jaunty flute theme weaves through the 3rd movement. Incidentally, the bluebirds do not refer to birds but to the light blue robes worn by the choristers at the monastery in Brno, which Janácek entered at the age of eleven. Almost 60 years later during a visit to Potsdam he remembered the Prussian troops' invasion of Brno and, with this in mind, wrote a chamber music miniature with a military element.
