Early on in his remarkable career as a concert pianist, Glenn Gould composed a few works of his own: a String Quartet (49008144), Piano Pieces (49007914) and the Sonata in two movements presented here. While rather roughly finished in places, this foray into composition clearly reflects the stylistic preferences of a highly individual performer.

For Piano Solo or Two Pianos, Four Hands Gould brought Wagner's brilliant counterpoint to life with the help of recording technology by superimposing a second, supplementary part over an initial recording. For live performances, it is preferable to have two pianists playing the piece on two pianos, rather than the piano solo version which is made possible with some cuts.
