Quarter-tone work with eerie effects and dissonances that are both expressive and startling. In three movements: I. Light, II. Shadows, III. Strobe. ca. 12 minutes.

I rely on the components of particular concerts to generate my musical materials. This commission from the New York Philharmonic provided me with a unique constellation of elements that eventually formed the basis of my approach to the work. My associations as a child attending rehearsals and performances with my father, who was then the concertmaster of the Philharmonic gave me the opportunity of getting to know many of the men in the orchestra both as artists and friends. This feeling of intimacy governed my decision to make sure that my first work for the Philharmonic utilized the entire orchestra. I was aware that, with a wind concerto, this is a potentially dangerous thing to do to solve problems of balance most such pieces are discreetly scored for small ensembles but it provided me with a fascinating challenge. About the revised edition (2015): In 1976, when I was writing the clarinet concerto, I used a method of cueing that I now consider unnecessarily difficult. The two outer movements now benefit from being in a notation that I have used for some years with conspicuous success. The two cadenzas in the first movement (especially the second), are much more playable now, although the notes themselves have not been altered. Also, in the third movement, some of the improvisation left to the orchestral musicians has now been notated to be conducted. John Corigliano's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (The Red Violin) draws upon music he composed for the film of the same name, which won an Academy Award for best film score. The story spans three centuries in the life of a magnificent but haunted violin in its travels through space and time. Corigliano composed this 36-minute concerto in memory of his father, the former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.

The text consists of the words I love you. The four singers seem to be involved in various romances which are pointed out by the stress placed on one of the three words. Duration ca. 4 minutes.

Originally composed in 2011 for Anne Akiko Meyersa and her daughter Natalie, it was later orchestrated for Marin Alsop's 20th season at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and has been transcribed for band. This original version is accessible to musicians and audiences, yet extremely sensitive with its dramatic sonorities, the music is both soothing and subtle even as the tonality is stretched. Soothing and lush, John Corigliano's 'Lullaby for Natalie' could lead a drowsy child toward a land of blissful slumber...this piece holds special significance for [Anne] Akiko Meyers: It was commissioned by her husband as a surprise to welcome their new daughter, Natalie, into the world...G. Corigliano's Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan was a commission by The Carnegie Hall Corporation for Sylvia McNair and was premiered at her Carnegie Hall recital given March 15, 2002 with Martin Katz at the piano. Corigliano, who had never encountered Dylan's own musical settings of the chosen poems, has given us new musical settings of icons of American folk music from the 1960s.

This seven movement flute concerto, premiered in 1981, is based on the Robert Browning story-poem of the piece's title. Corigliano recharacterized the Piper as an adolescent, who begins the score with power and control: it's only in discovering his personal theme that he's able to lead both the rats and the children. The finale of the concerto is driven by the Piper's desire to protect the children from parents who are as negligent of their young as they are dishonest in their business dealings. His is not just a siren song but a call to sanctuary. Pied Piper Fantasy was later expanded to the full-length ballet score The Pied Piper, premiered by American Ballet Theater in 2001. 40 minutes.

A musical interpretation of the Pied Piper legend first performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with James Galway, soloist, under the direction of Myung-Whun Ching in February 1982. This string quartet was inspired by a photo of Corigliano's father playing a violin and his uncle playing the guitar. It was commissioned by the Elements String Quartet and premiered in November 2003 at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.

This work won the 1964 Spoleto Festival Competition for Chamber Music and was first performed by violinist Yoko Matsuda and pianist Charles Wadsworth. Duration ca. 22 minutes.
