Besides Burgmuller's 25 Studies Op. 100 (ED 173) the 18 Studies Op. 109 play an important role as teaching material. This series of moderately difficult pieces deserves far wider circulation.

The 25 pieces in this book/CD pack have been composed as an alternative or addition to the popular 25 Romantic Studies Op. 100 by good old Friedrich Burgmnller. They are written in twentieth century idioms: rock, swing, Latin, and funk styles are all there, but romance is also present. All the pieces in Beatmnller are meant to be played solo, but the enclosed CD is a perfect tool to help develop the right drive and beat.

An outstanding compilation of piano etudes and exercises from the ever-popular Burgmuller's 25 Progressive Pieces, Opus 100, Czerny's Practical Method for Beginners on the Piano, Opus 599, and Hanon's The Virtuoso Pianist. Etudes are organized into four units according to difficulty and emphasize different aspects of technique and musicianship. Hanon exercises are included within each unit to reinforce the need for finger strength, independence and agility. Information about each composer's life, music and books is also provided.

While there are many composers who have written excellent piano etudes and exercises, the most famous, popular, and useful etudes are by Johann Friedrich Burgmuller (1806-1874), Carl Czerny (1791-1857), Charles-Louis Hanon (1819-1900) and Stephen Heller (1814-1881). Included in this volume are selected etudes from Burgmuller's "Twenty-five Progressive Pieces, Op. 100", "18 Characteristic Studies, Op. 109", and Hanon's "The Virtuoso Pianist." Etudes by Czerny were selected from Op. 139, Op. 599, Op. 718, Op. 823, and Op. 849. Brief biographies of the composers and practicing hints from Ingrid Clarfield are included.

Johann Friedrich Burgmuller (1806-1874) published several albums of piano studies that have become standard works. This collection consists entirely of 25 Progressive Pieces, Op. 100. Mr. Schaum has renamed some of the exercises with appealing titles and purposely abridged some of the exercises thereby avoiding stiffness and tension. Using the Burgmuller-Schaum exercises will improve piano technic when used in conjunction with a program of balanced piano repertoire.
