The three popular Intermezzi op. 117 can be seen as the epitome of Brahms' late work for piano. Clara Schumann confessed: In these pieces I at last feel musical life stir once again in my soul. Brahms reacted, as he often did, in a rather brusque manner. Although he sometimes described the three Intermezzi as being Wiegenlieder (lullabies), he formally rejected this title: It should then say, lullaby of an unhappy mother or of a disconsolate bachelor. The new edition of these moderately difficult Intermezzi (level of difficulty 5/6) has now been revised following the musical text of the Brahms Complete Edition, and has fingerings by Andreas Boyde.

In 1894 Johannes Brahms published his collection 'Deutsche Volkslieder mit Clavier-Begleitung', where his aim was to combine folksongs with a sophisticated musical approach. Nevertheless he strove to maintain the simple, forthright expressiveness of text and melody and mirror it in his accompaniment. As the guitar was originally an instrument of the people, the present arrangements should be 'in tune' with the composer's intentions.

Abounding in the dramatic power and intensity characteristic of their composerÂ's orchestral works, these two overtures are reproduced here from the authoritative Breitkopf & Härtel edition. The former features an engaging foundation of German student songs; the latter, a contrasting mood of melancholy.

During his research, Christopher Hogwood came across a source to which George Bozarth has drawn attention in the Spring of 2011 and which had not been available for any previous edition. The source consists of a one-page autograph of a piano piece which the young Brahms wrote in a guest book. Twelve years later Brahms re-used this literal Â"AlbumblattÂ" (untitled by Brahms) in his horn trio. The piano piece is published in a scholarly-critical edition, both as a facsimile and in modern notation.

BrahmsÂ's Ballades op. 10 form an integral part of the advanced piano literature. This publication represents a valuable addition to the repertoire of BrahmsÂ's piano works in Bärenreiter Urtext editions. The fingering by Brahms specialist Christian Köhn, the clear notation and optimum page turns fulfil the requirements of a practical performing edition. A detailed foreword with information on performance practice, the compositional process, sources and the significance of the work completes the edition.

The Scottish ballad Edward from J. G. Herders anthology of folk songs Stimmen der Völker in Liedern made such a deep impression on Brahms that, as he told a friend, the melodies came to him effortlessly. Edward provided the motif for the first of four ballade compositions, musical tales of a dramatic romantic nature that were linked with memories of Clara Schumann for Brahms. Julius Grimm, to whom the pieces were dedicated, also said that the Ballades are really for her. Robert Schumann was very enthusiastic about his young colleague's composition. The renowned pianist Lars Vogt provided fingering for our Urtext edition of this easy-to-play work. We present the scholarly musical text following the soon-to-be-published volume in the Brahms Complete Edition.

Brahms was extremely fond of Johann Gottfried Herder's folk poetry collection Stimmen der Völker in Liedern (Voices of Nations in Songs) and based the Ballade, Op. 10, No. 1 on the 'Edward' ballade from this poetry collection. The remaining three Ballades of Op. 10 have no direct reference to the performer to develop a greater understanding of the individual pieces and their relationship to each other when performed as a set.
