Composer, pianist, and author William Bolcom (b. 1938) is one of the cutting-edge figures on the American musical scene. A student of Milhaud and Messiaen, he has been noted for the development of a style of performing ragtime music which propelled him into the forefront of the ragtime revival. Bolcom has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 1973.

This bright and joyful work by Joan Morris and William Bolcom takes its text from The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Graham. Bringing in the many aspects of the Christmas season, it makes a fine feature for many types of concert programs.

This unique five-movement set was a collaboration between Bolcom and Curtis-Smith, both on the faculty at the University of Michigan. For a year, each composer would write ten measures before passing the piece back to the other, making these pieces true compositional collaborations. It was premiered by James Giles on November 15, 1998.

Bolcom's commission was originally to write a duet piece for Metropolitan Opera stars soprano Benita Valente and mezzo-soprano Tatiana Troyanos. However, while the composition was in development, Troyanos unexpectedly died. The design was then changed, representing the late mezzo-soprano with a viola instead. The composer selected three poems about the acceptance of death for the set: Ailey, Baldwin, Floyd, Killens and Mayfield (Maya Angelou), 'Tis not that Dying hurts us so (Emily Dickinson), and Let Evening Come (Jane Kenyon). Let Evening Come was recorded by soprano Benita Valenti, pianist Cynthia Raim and violist Michael Tree, and released on Centaur Records.

This sheet music features an arrangement for piano and voice with guitar chord frames, with the melody presented in the right hand of the piano part, as well as in the vocal line.

Pulitzer prize-winning composer William Bolcom wrote this choral anthem for the Ralph Waldo Emerson Bicentennial. Based on Emerson's famous text, Bolcom's originality and musicality shine through.

I had an overwhelming experience at Pierre Boulez's Domaine Musical concerts, as well as those of the French Radio (ORTF) that also specialized in the very newest music (a year-old piece was already passé). Although there seemed little interest in the Boulez-Stockhausen-Berio musical world in the U.S. when I returned in 1961, I would as pianist set out to rectify this omission, then only successfully on the West Coast. Night Pieces was written in Paris, shortly after I began my acquaintance with the current European international style, and premiered there. I never, however, wanted to eschew any musical reference from the past, including tonality as so many composers did then-and the first sound in the pieces is a C-major triad, in 1960 a shocking chord. What I did absorb from the prevailing style was its liberation from regular meter, and the gestural language is largely derived from Boulez andrelated piano music. (The reference to Schoenberg in the last prelude is an hommage.) David Chaitkin, the dedicatee, also lived at the Cité Universitaire when I was there. A fine composer, not well known enough; he passed away in 2011. ---William Bolcom
