Today op. 31 No. 2 is routinely referred to by its Nickname "Tempest Sonata." The only reference to its origin is found in Anton Schindler's biography of Beethoven. Schindler evidently asked Beethoven for an explanation of the sonata, at which point Beethoven allegedly replied: "just read Shakespeare's Tempest."
