The Danish flautist and composer Andersen was one of the founder members of the Berlin Philharmonic, and for 10 years was the orchestra's 1st flute. He toured extensively (including Russia and America) and shared a platform with artists like Hans von Bülow and Joseph Joachim. In addition to his performing career he also wrote studies for flute, instructive as well as musically attractive, which have become part of the standard works used in teaching. Further pieces by Andersen for flute and piano have been published by Schott in The Andersen Collection (EA 748).

The first edition of the Etudes de Genre (25 Études de Genre pour la Guitare par Nap. Coste Op:38) by Napoléon Coste was published by Richault in Paris in 1873. Following his normal practice, Coste conceived the studies for a seven-string guitar. This instrument was extended in the bass region by the addition of a seventh string tuned usually to D but occasionally to C. In adapting these studies for a six-string guitar both the tuning down of the sixth string to D, which is customary today, as well as the octave transpositions recommended by Coste himself have been taken into account. The sequence of the studies has been altered in order to make it more progressive.

The pieces are basically caprices (capriccios) which disregard formal rules in an imaginative and playful manner. Like the famous 24 Études Caprices by Jean Delphin Alard, the studies cover all major and minor scales of the circle of fifths. In addition to the original fingerings, this edition also contains alternative fingering variants which include both playing in the second position and modern change-of-position techniques like creeping and pivoting. Each study is preceded by short explanations of the editor Benjamin Bergmann concerning the contents and objectives of each study aswell as by practical technical information on the performance. This edition is published in the Essential Exercises study series which contains proven practical study works for instrumentallessons.

It is not widely known that Wagner composed piano music. The two album leaves are dedicated to important people in Wagner's life, Ernst Benedikt Kietz, a close friend, and Frau Betty Schott, the patroness and widow of the music publisher Franz Schott.
