Samuel Dushkin wrote several violin transcriptions of then known and popular melodies, naturally taken from works by his friend Stravinsky, but also by other composers such as Bizet and Rakhmaninov, Gershwin and Boccherini, and others. Dushkin formed a deeply moving lament for violin and piano out of the monologue of self-doubting Boris Godounov from the opera of the same name by Modest Mussorgsky.

At the beginning of the 1870s, Saint-Saëns displayed a particular partiality for the violoncello. He composed his first cello sonata in December 1872, immediately after having completed the first cello concerto. It was presumably directly after this that he wrote the Allegro appassionato for cello and piano op. 43 that also appeared in a version for orchestra three years later. We do not know why he wrote the work, but it is likely that after having written two weighty works for cello, Saint-Saëns wanted to write something easier that was also suitable as an encore. David Geringas kindly provided the fingering and bowing for the brilliant cello part.

The series "BärenreiterÂ's Concert Pieces" presents further editions with works by Oskar Rieding (BA 8982), Friedrich Seitz (BA 8979) and Joseph-Hector Fiocco (Ba 8977). All editions contain a solo violin part and a piano part for the piano accompanist. The series is edited by Kurt Sassmannshaus, the internationally-renowned violin teacher and co-author of the Sassmannshaus violin school tradition. His forewords introduce these little gems and include tips for successful first concerts. These editions form an ideal continuation of the Sassmannshaus violin school tradition and can be used in parallel from the third volume onwards or alongside any violin method.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741) is regarded as one of the most important Belgian composers of the late Baroque era. The Allegro in G major was originally a movement from the Harpsichord Suites (Pièces de clavecin, Op. 1, 1730). The arrangement for violin and piano by A.Bent and N.O'Neill in 1910 made the piece very popular, particularly among violinists. The piece makes demands on the player's left hand with its fast passages and virtuoso ornamentations and requires knowledge of all fingering patterns in first position. Occasionally, it is advisable to use third position to avoid major string changes. The passage work consists mostly of scale excerpts, triads, arpeggiation in thirds and sequences. The greatest challenge to master is the large number of string changes in a fast détaché, which requires a flexible bow hand. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons.
