Friedrich August Kummer (1797-1879) came from a family of musicians, studied violoncello with the renowned solo cellist Friedrich Dotzauer of the Dresden Court Chapel and then worked as a cellist first at the Royal Opera House, later at the Dresden Court Chapel. Kummer composed of course for 'his' instrument as well, writing not only a cello method, but also a large number of performance pieces. To prevent any trouble with difficult works, his works also include numerous studies and easy pieces such as '12 Duets for 2 Violoncellos' Op. 105. They are one-movement pieces which demand cantabile and concertante playing at a moderate level of difficulty and are the ideal introduction to chamber music playing.

Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) is considered to be the last great harp player of Ireland. He knew how to combine Irish music with Italian Baroque music, thus creating a large number of compositions, about 200 of which have survived. 16 of them were selected by Patrick PföB and arranged for two violins and cello for this edition.

6 Sonatas by Fortunato Chelleri, Antonio Martinelli and anonymous composers. The three Martinelli sonatas are his only compositions for cello and continuo that survive today.

Here is fresh material for young string ensembles presented by George Speckert who is a master arranger for amateur orchestras. Each of these 27 relatively short character pieces evokes a unique mood in its very title: Brisk, Sad, Sunset and many more. When heard in succession, the scenes sometimes unfold in the listenersÂ' minds like in a movie. The collection is perfect for creating short suites with an ad libitum number of movements, and thus is ideal for school recitals, family celebrations or street busking. Cyril Scott (1879 - 1970) composed Deux Préludes in 1912. Includes: I. Poème érotique and II. Danse. In the first of two Preludes, Poéme Érotique, the continually changing time signatures are the defining factor, displacing the bar accents between a rocking three and a rhapsodic five-quaver meter. The Danse that follows relies even more on the rhythmic acuity of its interpreters through an unfolding sucession of unusual meter changes. These two pieces will appeal to an advanced player wishing to enrich his repertoire with superb effective performance pieces. Schott's exemplary printing on buff-colored paper with slightly-larger-than-usual notation should serve to bring the unjustly neglected Scott back into the violin-repertoire fold.--Strings magazine

The six sonatas by Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) are among the best-known baroque compositions for violoncello and basso continuo. Marcello was a famous composer during his lifetime, and consequently his collection could be found in printed editions in the major European music metropolises of London, Paris and Amsterdam. Even if there is some uncomfortable fingering in these sonatas - which might be due to Marcello's working with a five-string cello with an added E' string - they are of only moderate difficulty and belong to the standard works of the violoncello teaching.

The six Sonatas of Benedetto Marcello are staples of baroque compositions for the cello. Already during the composer's lifetime, the pieces were well-known and published around Europe. The pieces are of moderate difficulty and presented here with the original continuo part as well as a realized piano version. Who would have thought that ragtime would enjoy another renaissance? More than 50 years after the death of its main representative, Scott Joplin, the film The Sting has made this once popular style well-known and fashionable again. This small selection of Joplin rags is of course not complete without The Entertainer. In comparison, Easy Winners and Rag-Time Dance are no less fun to play, particularly since in the latter the performer not only has to play but also stomp his foot. Hugo Schlemüller (1872-1919), pianist, teacher and music writer, taught violoncello in the preparatory school of Dr. Hoch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. During this time, he wrote numerous works for violoncello lessons for beginners, among them the easy performance pieces Op. 12. The pieces with piano accompaniment are playable in the first close position throughout and are suitable for students at the end of the first year of training who also wish to master a few little musically demanding challenges from time to time. This edition is part of the new Schott Student Edition series which offers varied literature at five different levels of difficulty, from 1 (easy) to 5 (difficult), for instrumental lessons.

Schetky (1737-1824) was a cellist himself. He played the cello in the Darmstadt Court Orchestra and gave concerts as a freelance cellist in Germany and London. In 1774 he became principal cellist of the Edinburgh Musical Society and married the daughter of the Austrian cellist Joseph Reinagle (1762-1836). These upper intermediate level cello duets were composed in London as teaching pieces, first published in 1780.

This arrangement for viola is based upon the Urtext edition of the Violin Sonatinas (HL 49003963), which is based upon the original Frankfut edition published by Telemann himself in 1718.
