At an early age, Johannes Brahms showed an interest in the music of composers before him. In this context, he came across the variations and themes of George Frideric Handel which, in turn, inspired him to write an extensive wor k of variations for the piano. This new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition is based on a meticulous comparison of autographs, first editions and personal copies. BrahmsÂ' autograph copy served as an essential corrective and subsequent corrections made by the composer in Max KalbeckÂ's personal copy were taken into account as well.
