Danzon No.2 (composer ARTURO MARQUEZ)
In its original orchestral form, Danzón No. 2 has enjoyed significant popularity on performance programs everywhere. The danzón, itself, was Cuban-born, from a natural synthesisof Spanish, British, and French dance forms. As Márquez has discovered, ""the apparent lightness of the danzón is only like a visiting card for a type of music full ofsensuality and qualitative seriousness."" Of Danzón No. 2, Joseph Stevenson writes for All Music Guide, ""The composition is built on a beautiful, elegant main theme, stated at the outset on clarinet. It preserves both the traditional rondo form and the tendency to begin in a state of restraint and erupt into passionate rhythms later.""Oliver Nickel's arrangement for concert band is suitable for Grade 5 and above.
