Title Burning: Global outrage, denouncing terrorist acts on 9.11.2001

The Elements Quartet had commissioned an interesting assemblage of composers to write brief "snapshots" for string quartet, each inspired by a different photograph. Chen Yi (New Yorker since 1986) chose the photo that most directly impacted her, and allowed her to express the "Burning" she felt after the attack on her city. The result is a world of extreme emotional elements on a 3-minute canvas.

Title Energetic Duo for Two Violins

When Chen Yi writes for violin, she brings not only the inventive sparkle characteristic of all her music, but also the personal and visceral feel of composing idiomatically for her own instrument. Energetic Duo was written as a 50th birthday gift for violinist Ron Blessinger of the Portland Symphony and Third Angle new music ensemble.

Title From Old Peking Folklore

From the composer's notes 'I spent 8 years studying composition in Beijing about 30 years ago. When I went back to visit the city, and toured the newly opened Capital Museum in recent years, I couldn't help smiling when I saw everything in the exhibition that is so familiar to me. It reminded me of the folk music of the area, Jin Yun Da Gu, which is a kind of musical story telling, accompanied by a drum (played by the singer), which leads a small Chinese instrumental ensemble (the music is played in the style of the speaking singing. I used this musical language in the creation of my duet, in which the violin part imitates the fingering, bowing, style, and the spirit of Chinese traditional music and instruments. Combined with the piano accompaniment, my duet sounds like short story told and sung in the form of the old Jing Yun Da Gu.'

Title Memory for Solo Violin

Truly masterful in her ability to marry Western performance ideals with the folk music of China, Chen Yi wrote this plaintive memorial work in tribute to the passing of her teacher, Professor Lin Yaoji. In the program notes, the composer speaks to her mentor: "I wish you could hear the tune in my Memory, which sounds like my painful cry out of your name in our Cantonese dialect. I expressed my deep sorrow in the music, to remember your fatherly mentorship. Your meaningful smile will always be with us encouragingly." Dur.: 3┬'30

Title Northern Scenes for Piano

Chen Yi's 8-minute musical poem is imaginative and expressive, with layers of passion and lyricism, and a misty sense of suspended time. The composer was inspired by nature, creating the lines: In the north, the vast and magnificent blue mountains, boundless, desolate, and indistinct...Northern Scenes was premiered in 2013 by pianist and dedicatee Susan Chan (Assoc. Prof. of Music, Portland State University), an advocate for Asian music and music by women composers. For advanced pianists.

Title
cover for Spring Festival
Spring Festival - BandQuest Series Grade 3

Composer Chen Yi wrote Spring Festival as a celebration of the Chinese New Year and all the traditions that accompany this special Chinese festival. While the melody is drawn from a southern Chinese folk ensemble piece called Lion Playing Ball, the form of the piece is based on the idea of the Golden Section. Learn more on YouTube! BandQuest®, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece.ÿMany BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Visit www.bandquest.org to learn more about this innovative series, and email bandquest@composersforum.org to request a free downloadable audio catalog.ÿ

Title Variations on "Awariguli"

Chen Yi┬'s sparklingly inventive variations are based on the Chinese folk song ┬"Awariguli,┬" the name of a beautiful girl from the Uygur ethnic minority in Xinjiang. This solo piano work was written during the composer┬'s freshman year at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and premiered by her sister Chen Min in October 1979. While the theme, 9 variations, and dramatic coda are somewhat traditional in structure, they clearly enjoy Chen Yi┬'s fascinating mix of Western and Chinese musical flavor. For intermediate to advanced players. Dur.: 9┬'
