cover for Der zerbrochene Krug
Der zerbrochene Krug - Vocal Score

Ullmann finished his one act opera 'Der zerbrochene Krug' after a play of the same title by Heinrich von Kleist shortly before his internment in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (Terezin), where he was to compose his most widely known work, the opera 'Der Kaiser von Atlantis' (The Emperor of Atlantis). 'Der zerbrochene Krug' opens with a substantial very atmospheric overture and is dominated by burlesque and comic scenes. The work is available on an Orfeo CD in a recording conducted by Gerd Albrecht. Vocal score.

Title Piano Sonatas Volume 1, No. 1-4

Ullman's seven Piano Sonatas were written between 1936 and 1944. Though rediscovered as recently as 1990, they are now available in a number of recordings.

Neo-classical in approach, the piano writing and the use of polytonality places them closer to Skriabin and Prokofiev than to the works of Ullman's teachers Arnold Schoenberg and Alois Hába • this applies also to the Piano Concerto, written during the same period. The numerous quotes from Mozart, Wagner, Mahler, and Dukas to folksongs and tunes from operettas are particulary interesting in this context.

Title
cover for Variations and Double Fugue, Op. 3a
Variations and Double Fugue, Op. 3a - Edition Schott

Viktor Ullmann presented his cycle of variations on the fourth of the well-known Six Little Piano Pieces Op. 19 by his teacher Arnold Schoenberg in three versions at once · for piano, for string quartet and for large orchestra. Schoenberg's atonal miniature is extended here into a larger form, with the Gavotte and Minuet also making reference to Schoenberg's Piano pieces Op. 25. The setting for piano is a virtuoso feat on a scale reminiscent of Max Reger. Of the original 21 variations in an earlier version which has not survived, Ullmann selected nine for his final version. An interim version performed at the 1929 IGNM festival in Geneva, consisting of five variations and differing in many details, is published as an appendix.
