Turnage has a natural affinity for the voice. This is shown here with the use of classic texts by Stevie Smith (The Singing Cat), Thomas Hardy (Last Words) and Walt Whitman (Song of Myself). These 3 Songs were written for Gerald Finley who created the role of Harry Heagan in Turnage's highly successful opera "The Silver Tassie". The Singing Cat · Mourned · Last Words

An Invention on 'Solitude' is typical of much of the music Turnage has written for chamber ensembles: in contrast to the flamboyant contrasts and dangerous edge to his orchestral music, this is quiet, introspective and tender music, lasting only 8 minutes.

Greek is a translation of the Oedipus myth into the contemporary East End of London. Racism, violence and mass unemployment appear as metaphors for the plague that afflicts London, and form the background for the story of Eddy.

The work is based on a tune called The Nag written by the jazz guitarist/composer John Scofield, of whom I have long been a fan and with whom I worked closely when writing Blood on the Floor (Mark-Anthony Turnage). 'The grim frenzy, the waste and the futility of war are all embedded in Silent Cities.' (The Times)

Winner of the 2000 Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, Mark-Anthony Turnage's searing adaptation of Sean O'Casey's anti-war play has been acclaimed as one of the best new operas of recent years, and was revived at English National Opera by popular demand. ENO has released a CD featuring the original cast for the revival.

Commissioned by Washington Performing Arts Society for Leif Oves Andnes who gave the first performance. They are attractive and not too difficult, clearly stamped with Turnage`s lyrical style.
