This wonderful new recording of Rachmaninoff's Preludes, Op. 32 includes some of the most beautiful and finely wrought of all Rachmaninoff's piano music and features an excellent performance by pianist, Dr. Kenneth Saxon. Dr. Saxon is a native of Georgia and a graduate of Shorter College and the University of Alabama. His teachers include Helen Ramsaur, Amanda Penick and Elizabeth Buday. He is the Coordinator of Accompanying at the University of Texas at Brownsville.

Alongside HN 1264 (the Etude in e flat minor op. 39,5), we are now offering the Etude in C major in a single edition, taken from our much-loved complete edition of the 17 Études-Tableaux. Rachmaninoff greatly valued this work, often included it in his concert programmes and also recorded it. A longing melody unfolds over a simple accompaniment. This charming piece that alternates between major and minor is a good technical exercise for the crossing over of the hands, but does not contain nearly as many difficulties as Rachmaninoff's other etudes and is thus also manageable by advanced amateurs. They will be aided in the Henle Urtext edition by the helpful fingerings provided by the virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin.

Between 1914 and 1917, Sergei Rachmaninoff published two volumes of Études-Tableaux - a term coined by the composer with which he succeeded in expressing the blend of technical studies with programmatic character pieces. As with the concert etudes of Chopin or Liszt, they represent a technical and interpretational touchstone for every pianist. One of the best-known pieces amongst them is the Étude-Tableau in E-flat minor with its dark towering chords and a weaving elegiac melody, such as only Rachmaninoff could write - so it is hardly surprising that none other than Vladimir Horowitz regularly performed the work in his concerts and recorded it several times.

This large four-movement work, written in 1893, was premiered by Rachmaninoff and Pavel Pabst in Moscow. It is dedicated to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A few lines of poetry by Romantic poets preface each movement. The theme of love in the first two movements is brought to life by the two pianos with colorful, passionate writing. The final two movements feature the sound of bells---the third movement inspired by cathedrals bells that Rachmaninoff heard as a youngster, and the fourth movement capturing the jubilant sound of Easter carillon.
