The ongoing New Liszt Edition from EMB nears completion of the first phase - piano solo works, with the release of Volume 4 of the Supplement series. Of this series of twenty-four études planned by Liszt only twelve were actually written, but the contemporary printed editions of the completed pieces (in the hope of a continuation) appeared with the series title '24 grandes études'. By publishing these 12 concert studies it makes the earlier and technically more difficult version of the Transcendental Studies available for the first time since 1911 for study by performers and those engaged in music research. Contrary to the 1911 edition among the volumes of the first complete Liszt edition, NLE will publish also the text variants of some studies, an album leaf in F sharp major in facsimile and in transcription considered as the 13th study planned by Liszt for the series, and the earlier versions of so-called Mazeppa and Ab irato studies. In the volume will be published the puzzling album leaf, the so-called 'Prélude omnitonique' and some similar album leaves, too. The Two Concert Studies, which Liszt composed in 1863 for the Grand Theoretical and Practical Piano School by Sigmund Lebert and Ludwig Stark, became rather popular already in his lifetime. Morceau de salon is also a publication for piano education and was written for the Méthode des méthodes de piano of François-Joseph Fétis and Ignaz Moscheles and published in 1840. The virtuoso concert study was revised by Liszt under the title Ab irato a decade later. This edition contains the score of and critical notes to the above works as published in the New Liszt Edition, as well as prefaces in English and German, which provide information aboutall the important issues concerning the genesis and performance rendering.

This volume contains works published for the first time from the composerÂ's surviving manuscripts, as well as original versions of works that were published during LisztÂ's lifetime, but later reworked. Of the earlier versions connected with Years of Pilgrimage, 2nd Year, Italy, the most noteworthy are the two completed versions of the Dante sonata, which are now appearing in print for the first time. Further important compositions belonging to the Italy cycle are the Petrarch sonnets. Of additional significance is the Freischütz fantasia, a fine example of the type of opera fantasia Liszt developed at the beginning of the 1840s, and published here for the first time.

Between 1837-39 Liszt was travelling through Italy with Marie d'Agoult. As was the case with the first volume of the Années de Pèlerinage, Schweiz (1835/36) he once again recorded his travel impressions in musical form. He devoted himself to subjects from literature (Petrarca, Dante) and the visual arts (Raffael, Michelangelo). Many years later Liszt reworked the pieces, publishing them in 1858 as Années de Pèlerinage, Zweites Jahr, Italien. The central work in this volume is the large-scale so-called Dante Sonata (Après une Lecture de Dante, see also single edition HN 981). The Sonetto 104 del Petrarca (also available as a single edition HN 982) is just as popular. In 1861 Liszt published an appendix to Volume II, Venezia e Napoli, which is also available as a separate edition HN 985.

In 1835/1836 Liszt was staying in Switzerland with his mistress Marie Comtesse d'Agoult. He published his bold, avant-garde musical portrayal of his travels in the Swiss mountains in 1842 under the title Album d'un Voyageur. Around 1850 the one-time enfant terrible had become a mature composer. Liszt reworked his early compositions and published them in 1855 as Années de Pèlerinage, Erstes Jahr, Schweiz. The showpiece in the collection is the naturalistic and poetic Vallée d'Obermann after the novel by Senancourt; the early version is also reproduced in the appendix to our edition (single edition with extensive commentary of the 1855 version HN 813).

In 1883 the third volume of Années de Pèlerinage was published. Whereas the pieces in Volumes I and II were recollections of early travels in Switzerland and Italy, the new works, composed between 1867 and 1877, were more of a religious pilgrimage. Some parts already reflect Liszt's austere later compositional style. With the visionary Jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este, on the other hand, he almost enters the world of Impressionist sounds (it inspired Ravel to write his Jeux d'eau). The Bible quotation about the water of life, contained in a footnote, leaves no doubt as to the spiritual dimension of the piece (also available in a separate edition HN 983).

Often referred to as the Dante Sonata, this single-movement sonata is based on the Canto Inferno in Dante's poem, which depicts the soul's descent into hell. Now available as a single Urtext edition.

Liszt wrote his two Ballades in 1845-49 and 1853 during a time of personal turmoil. The successful virtuoso increasingly saw himself as a composer who strove after formal clarity, as shown by the B minor sonata that was also composed in 1853. When Liszt began work on the first Ballade, he had just separated from his mistress of many years, Marie Comtesse d'Agoult. He called the first sketches for the work Dernières Illusions. A better-known work is the second Ballade in B minor, with whose ending he struggled (the two fortissimo endings in Liszt's autograph have been published for the first time in the appendix to our edition).

An expressive piano work drawn from the cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, which was inspired by religious-philosophical poems of the French Romantic Alphonse de Lamartine. Includes Liszt's fingering and Lamartine's text in three languages.
