For violinist Olga Bloom, late founder of Bargemusic in Brooklyn, Hailstork has composed a memorial in the style of Mozart and Bach for two violins. A la Mozart features counterpoint, unison, and duo playing between the instruments throughout its six minute performance.

This piece is a contemporary adaptation of the traditional spiritual, Wade in the Water incorporating blues scales, mixed meters, and extended phrases. Adolphus Hailstork received his doctorate in composition from Michigan State University, where he was a student of H. Owen Reed. He had previously studied at Manhattan School of Music under Vittorio Giannini and David Diamond, at the American Institute at Fountainbleau with Nadia Boulanger, and at Howard University with Mark Fax.

Sonata for Solo Cello is a 17-minute journey through musical depths. Each of its three movements explores a spectrum of moods and tempi, with thoroughly braided paths of interrelated themes. While the sonata starts with a wink at Bach as a diving-in point, its development and overall profundity are more akin to the monuments of later musical literature.

Cast in a formal mold inspired by the Bach partitas, Hailstork's four-movement SUITE FOR SOLO VIOLIN begins with a perky Prelude, followed by a March with a few subtle winks at music from the Prelude. The third movement is a beautiful Melody with slow-fast-slow form, and the Finale incorporates a few remembrances of the previous movements in building a dramatic drive to the finish.

Cello is the perfect instrument to showcase through this fascinating set of variations on a theme of universal unity. The celloÂ's range and tone evoke the baritone voice, and its facility in contrapuntal playing allows for polyphony in the manner of BachÂ's cello suites. The theme (sounding like a spiritual) is actually the final chorus of the composerÂ's "Earthrise," a profoundly bold cantata using SchillerÂ's Â"Ode to JoyÂ" as text, and full of allusions to all four movements of BeethovenÂ's ninth symphony. HailstorkÂ's "Earthrise" features a festival chorus singing in German, alternating with an African-American chorus singing in English with vernacular verve. The choruses ultimately unite to end the cantata together with Â"Draw the Sacred Circle Closer,Â" a translation of lines from SchillerÂ's Â"Ode to Joy.Â" For advanced cellists

The American Guild of Organists celebrated its 2016 annual convention by commissioning Adolphus Hailstork to create a one-movement work for Viola and Organ, for which Hailstork created the haunting Lenten Mourning Tears. Engulfed in inspiration and ideas for this striking instrumental pairing, the composer added a mystically beautiful Christmas movement, and a sublime Easter, resulting in a three-movement concert suite whose movements could also stand alone for liturgical settings. Adolphus HailstorkÂ's Three Spirituals for string trio is the Â"perfect stormÂ" as his inspirations from African-American and European traditions cross-pollinate.
