Paul Dessau, whose collaboration with Bertolt Brecht made a significant impression in the consciousness of music-lovers, is an extremely versatile composer. Two short pieces from his piano works are now published for the first time: the unconventional study on B-A-C-H and the Intermezzo breve, whose tempo marking Grotewohl tempo serves to point its dedication to the politician Otto Grotewohl.

The Cadenza Series presents cadenzas of well-known instrumental concertos from the classical and romantic periods. Each cadenza was composed by an outstanding composer or soloist of our time. German composer Paul Dessau composed this cadenza for Mozart's Piano Concerto in C Major, K. 467 in 1947.

Increasing numbers of recent studies provide evidence that learning to play an instrument stimulates the intelligence and promotes a general aptitude for learning. Paul Dessau realised this as early as 1948, when he composed the Five little exercises for the hands and the brain also in exile in Hollywood. Private piano lessons were one of the composer's few reliable sources of income at that time. But later, too, Dessau devoted himself to teaching music, not least in bringing up his own son Maxim, to whom the Piano piece with lots of g's is dedicated. There is abundant fingering with special attention given to substitute fingering on repeated notes. The last piece, 'Für Helli,', has a complex harmonic and rhythmic structure, and the right hand spans a tenth.--Clavier

The successful operetta composer Jean Gilbert (pseudonym of Max Winterfeld) was a cousin of Paul Dessau. Dessau composed the piece for the wedding of Mariana Stark, a relative of both Paul Dessau and Jean Gilbert.

For intermediate players, these two pieces may be performed individually or as a set. The German composer Paul Dessau (1894-1979) wrote this music in the 1930s; it was not discovered until 1992.
