In autumn 1891 Debussy's early piano piece, Ballade slave, was published by Choudens. When he had it re-engraved by Fromont in a slightly revised form in 1903, he deleted the word slave. Thus the title pointed more markedly to the work's narrative character. Yet one can detect a certain Russian influence, stemming from the time he spent with Nadeshda von Meck - Debussy was at times her house pianist. Even echoes of Balakirev can be heard. The occasionally unconventional tonal approach already heralds the Debussy of the important cycle Pour le Piano, published in 1901.

Debussy's 'Sonate pour violoncello et piano' was composed in the summer of 1915. It was the first of a planned set of six sonatas for various instrumental combinations of which Debussy only completed three. Imbued with that unmistakable Debussy charm this work has remained a standard in the repertoire since the premiere. It is without question the most performed cello sonata of the 20th century. Regina Back's Urtext edition for the first time makes use of Debussy's sketches held in a private collection which contain not only an important comment by Debussy regarding the balance of the instruments but also clarify several musical ambiguities found in the autograph and first edition. Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition comes with a detailed preface (Ger/Eng/Fr) elaborating not only on the genesis of the composition and its first performances but also providing performance practice information. The edition is rounded off with a facsimile and a critical commentary.

ComposerÂ's last three chamber works, written between 1915 and 1917. Cello Sonata is rich in unconventional, sometimes surrealistic effects. Violin Sonata integrates jazz influences with impressionism. Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp sparkles with spontaneity and innovation. All are sonatas of individual charm and definite 20th-century character; all reproduced from authoritative French editions.
